MILK 03/17/2011

In the movie MILK directed by Gus Van Sant, this is a story about an openly gay American activist and first elected gay official Harvey Milk who fought for gay rights and equality during the 1970’s.  Thinking back in our American history, the 1960’s served as an era where most civil rights movement took place since the American civil war.  Blacks fought to rid off the Jim Crow laws and women fought for better wages and equality in the work force.  In 2008, congress passed proposition 8 allowing “only” same sex marriage in California.   Having said all that, come to think of it, how do we define that “all men are created equal” in our Declaration of Independence?  What do we mean by the word “we” in We the people… when our forefathers wrote the constitution? Personally, i think that America is still redefining its laws in regards to who should deserve the freedom and equality in this nation despite of color, social status, race and sexual orientation.  However, the fight for gay rights and equality will be an ongoing battle  in our dominant judeo-christian society.   I’m not going to digress on how influential in our so-called Christianity or muslim religion has on world politics but i believe that religion has a great impact in our lives in terms of morality and ethics.  However, that undermines equal rights for all as it was described in our Declaration of Independence that stated;

“….We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness…”

Well, in a nutshell it’s a working progress.
